Mattel Issues Apology After Wicked Doll Packaging Directs Fans to Porn Site: ‘We Deeply Regret This Unfortunate Error’

A web address mishap gave Wicked fans an unexpected surprise when they purchased dolls based on the upcoming movie adaptation of the beloved 2003 Broadway musical.

Due to a typo, the URL printed on the boxes of Mattel’s Wicked dolls for characters Elphaba and Glinda led fans, not to the official website for the movie starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, but to a pornographic site with a similar name.

In response, Mattel issued an apology and acknowledged the error.

“Mattel was made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Wicked collection dolls, primarily sold in the U.S., which was intended to direct consumers to the official WickedMovie.com landing page,” Mattel stated to Entertainment Weekly. “We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy it. Parents are advised that the misprinted URL is not suitable for children.”

The company’s statement further advised, “Consumers who already have the product should discard the product packaging or obscure the link and may contact Mattel Customer Service for additional information.”

The incorrect URL on the packaging, Wicked.com, leads to Wicked Pictures, an adult film website known for producing parody films such as Black Widow XXX and Captain Marvel XXX: An Axel Braun Parody.

Before this issue came to light, Erivo and Grande had shared their excitement on social media about their miniature look-alikes. In keeping with the Wicked aesthetic, Erivo posed in her signature green look, while Grande channeled Glinda’s iconic pink.

The star-studded movie adaptation of Wicked, directed by Jon M. Chu, also features Jonathan Bailey, Bowen Yang, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum.

This packaging error is the film’s first accidental brush with adult content, though actor Jonathan Bailey, known for Bridgerton, once joked about an early filming moment when he found himself clad in only Fiyero’s boots. “There’s an amazing photo that no one’s ever gonna see of me in just my boots, which felt oddly right for Fiyero,” Bailey laughed.

At 2023’s CinemaCon, Chu teased that the film would be a grand cinematic experience. “This movie has everything: giant musical numbers, big action sequences, and a fresh take on the classic Wizard of Oz story,” he said. “At its heart, though, it’s really about change and the importance of transformation.”

Wicked Part One opens on November 22, 2024, with Part Two slated for release on November 26, 2025.
