Talia Shire Cast as Melissa Schemmenti’s Mother on Abbott Elementary After Bette Midler’s Public Plea
Talia Shire, best known for her iconic roles as Connie Corleone in The Godfather trilogy and Adrian Pennino in the Rocky films, will guest star in an upcoming holiday special of Abbott Elementary. Shire has been cast as the mother of Melissa Schemmenti, played by Lisa Ann Walter, the no-nonsense, tough-love Italian-American teacher on the hit ABC comedy.
The Holiday Episode: “Winter Break”
The episode, titled Winter Break, will air on December 4 as part of a one-hour holiday special featuring two back-to-back episodes. The story will follow Melissa as she hosts her extended Schemmenti family for a Christmas Eve dinner, going to great lengths to make the evening perfect. ABC has even released a first-look photo of Shire alongside Walter, giving fans a glimpse of their on-screen mother-daughter dynamic.
Bette Midler’s Public Pitch
Interestingly, Shire’s casting comes after legendary entertainer Bette Midler openly lobbied for the role earlier this year. Midler took to social media, tweeting:
“Since I’m now using this website to pitch myself on TV shows, I would also like to play Melissa Schemmenti’s mother on Abbott Elementary. If you see Quinta Brunson, please tell her.”
The request was met with enthusiasm by the show’s creator and star, Quinta Brunson, who called it “a surreal, pinch-me moment.” Lisa Ann Walter, however, acknowledged that casting decisions were beyond her control, even though working with Midler would have been “a dream come true.”
Expanding the Schemmenti Clan
Shire’s casting adds to the growing list of Abbott Elementary’s notable guest stars, including Lauren Weedman as Melissa’s sister Kristin Marie, a teacher at a rival school. While details about other members of the Schemmenti family remain under wraps, the show’s fans are excited to see how the rest of the fiery, larger-than-life clan will come to life on screen.

Star-Studded Season Ahead
This is just one of many exciting guest appearances planned for the current season. Previous guest stars include Taraji P. Henson as Brunson’s on-screen mother, Vanetta, and Ayo Edebiri as Brunson’s sister, Ayesha. Additionally, the show is set to deliver a crossover with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia in January, inspired by Quinta Brunson’s love of nostalgic TV crossovers like Steve Urkel’s appearance on Full House.
Abbott Elementary Keeps Raising the Bar
Brunson and her team are continuing their tradition of bringing beloved actors into the Abbott Elementary universe. After earning nine Emmy nominations earlier this year, the show is proving it has the star power and creativity to remain one of TV’s most talked-about comedies.
Mark your calendars for Winter Break on December 4, where Talia Shire’s debut promises to add even more heart—and hilarity—to Abbott Elementary.
