PETA says it sent Whoopi Goldberg a bar of soap to “wash her mouth out” after she used the term “pigs” as an insult on The View.

PETA issued a press release expressing its disappointment with The View host’s language, stating, “PETA hopes to impart on Whoopi Goldberg that words carry power.” The organization noted that, just as offensive words are phased out of common language, using “anti-animal” language is a step toward recognizing that “animals are individuals who experience joy, pain, love, and grief.”

During the Nov. 7 episode, Goldberg had used “pigs” to describe grocery store owners, attributing them with responsibility for rising food prices. In response, PETA symbolically sent a bar of soap to Goldberg, suggesting she “wash out” language that demeans animals. The soap, wrapped in packaging encouraging positive, non-animal-related phrases, was reportedly sent to The View’s New York City studio.

While The View did not respond to requests for comment, PETA confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that the soap had been mailed to Goldberg’s workplace.

The incident follows another recent episode where Goldberg humorously confronted an uninvited guest on the set — a gnat that briefly disrupted the Hot Topics discussion in October. Goldberg tracked down the insect and clapped it out of action in the studio while co-host Sara Haines was speaking.

The View has often supported animal-related causes, with co-host Sunny Hostin frequently promoting pet adoptions, and panelist Alyssa Farah Griffin dedicating her 2023 birthday episode to highlighting dogs in need of homes.

The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on ABC.
